Proceeding to the tendency which is already reality in many cities around the world, which is to use granite as a substitution for the Portuguese mosaic stones in public thoroughfares, Cachoeiro Stone Fair 2009 will present the diverse possibilities of applications in public areas, such as passage ways and parks. The architect Renato Paldês is working on a project to create, in the event area, a space to advertise the use of stones in public thoroughfares. Situated in Cachoeiro de Itapermirin for 27 years, Paldês has an amp experience in using granite in architectural projects.
Besides exposing the applicability of this product, the Cachoeiro Stone Fair will also promote seminars with this approach hoping to arouse a discussion on the subject among the cities of Espirito Santo and other states. Paldês emphasizes the use of dimensional stones in public thoroughfares is important, especially, because this can be an alternative to use the left overs generated by the sector. Based in recent studies along with companies from of the sector from Espirito Santo, he affirms that the left over’s reach 2.2 million square meters / a year which is about 122 thousand tons / a year. He stated that 14% of each slap are left over’s.

These losses are because of the limitation of cuts which can be done on blocks and slabs, which end up generating pieces of stone which can be utilized, but recently they are just thrown away or just now used at all. “What we intend on showing is that, with creativity, its possible to use these products in projects which offer beauty, durability and easy maintenance”, stated the architect, which hopes, with his project, to stir up a discussion for new utilization concepts of marble and granite.
The use of granite in public thoroughfares is common in cities like London and Paris. In the Champs Elysees, one of the most impotents passage ways of the city of light, were placed 7cm thick granite slabs. The use of stone pavement in public areas is a growing tendency and has been getting the attention of the Brazilian architects. For its durability and easy maintenance, the granite is a strong candidate to be used in public spaces, it is already being used in places like the new beach side walk of Praia de Camburi and the Praça do Papa, in Vitoria, Espirito Santo, where there are various details in dimensional stones. The participants of Cachoeiro Stone Fair will get to know more about this theme.
